Part 1 - A Japanese badger called Tanuki roams the countryside seducing many young human girls. He marries a woman named Miho and they have a child, but they both eventually leave him.
Part 2 - Three generations after Tanuki and Miho, three American MIA's, after escaping a prison camp, choose to remain living in their secret haven Villa Incognito which is in the highlands of Laos. One of the Americans is arrested for smuggling narcotics, which is, among selling rubies, is a source of profit for the Americans. The other two Americans are sought after once their comrade was found.
Part 3 - The arrested comrade, Dern, and his two sisters, Pru and Bootsey, are questioned about the whereabouts of the other two Americans. There is a flashback to how the Americans came to live in Laos. Lisa Ko, a circus performer and descendant of Miho, finds out that her show animals, the tanukis, have gone missing.
Part 4 - The ethics of smuggling heroin are discussed by the Americans and it is decided that they will only sell their drugs to medical facilities. One of the Americans, Dickie, reflects on how he first discovered all the rubies that they started selling. One of the Americans, Stubblefield, falls off the wire and dies. The search for the MIA's finally ends.
Epilogue 1 - Stubblefield's body was never found. Dern chose to remain living in Laos by himself. Dickie sold his rubies, got married, moved to Colorado, and wrote a song about Villa Incognito.
Epilogue 2 - Tanuki and his fox friend, Kitsune, discuss the humans' actions and their fate.
